During the session, the facilitator discussed the concept of gender discrimination, emphasizing how it creates inequality and restricts opportunities for women and girls in all aspects of life. The following key issues were highlighted: Unequal Opportunities: Women often face barriers in accessing education, employment, and leadership roles due to discriminatory beliefs and practices. Stereotypes and Social Expectations: Gender roles and expectations pressure women to remain confined to domestic responsibilities, limiting their personal growth. Limited Economic Independence: Women are frequently paid less than men for the same work and are underrepresented in decision-making positions. Lack of Legal Protection: Many women are unaware of their legal rights or are afraid to speak out due to social stigma and weak legal enforcement.

In this session, the facilitator engaged adolescent participants in understanding the roots and consequences of gender discrimination. The discussion highlighted how societal norms, stereotypes, and power imbalances affect both girls and boys during their formative years, often limiting opportunities and shaping unequal futures. Key points included:

  • Stereotypical Gender Roles: Adolescents are often taught that girls should be quiet, obedient, and focused on household tasks, while boys are expected to be strong, dominant, and career-focused.
  • Unequal Access to Education: Girls may be pulled out of school due to early marriage, domestic responsibilities, or fear of harassment, while boys are often prioritized for further education.
  • Lack of Decision-Making Power: Adolescent girls, in particular, are not allowed to make choices about their own lives, such as pursuing higher education or choosing friends.

Peer Pressure and Bullying: Young people face discrimination and emotional abuse from peers based on how well they conform to gender norms.
